Best Laptops for Typing work in 2025 – Buyer’s Guide
Whether you’re looking for the best laptops for novelists, screenwriting, publishing, authors, or journalism students; here are some thumbs of rules that you should keep in mind.
Keyboard
A keyboard is an essential component that a writer looks into a laptop. Why not? It is not just about only typing some emails; writers can check the durability peak point of any keyboard. So, it becomes necessary to choose the right keyboard, that “suit” your hands.
The space between keys, depth, and feedback these are few things that only a writer or a person who does typing work, can understand.
There are mainly two types of keyboard available in the laptops – mechanical and membrane.
Mechanical keyboards have some “click-clack” type sound when pressing and releasing them, because they have hard keys underneath, and they are ideal for the gamers. On the other hand, membrane keyboards have the soft rubber underlay that provides tactile feedback.
However, you can connect any types of input device when you are home, but if you think practically, then you need a laptop with the right keyboard.
Screen Size
Nowadays, a big screen is not just for watching a movie or games; writers also want the big screen that can handle their rigorous searching.
As I said earlier, writers are no less than scientists; no one knows how much information they consume before writing the viral content.
For this reason, a 10″ screen is not going to work. In windows laptops, 15.6″ screen is typical, but for portability, a 13″ screen works fine. However, you can add a 1440p monitor or ultra-wide monitor in your setup for extending your working area if you’re at home.
Processor
Like a gaming laptop or 3D modeling workstation, writing job doesn’t need that sophisticated hardware configuration. However, it doesn’t mean that even a Pentium processor would be enough for you. For choosing a laptop for writers, you should choose at least Intel Core i3 Processor of the latest Generation like i3-7500U or i3-8130U.
In facts, an Intel i5 processor from the U or Y product lineup would be great. In case you don’t know, I want to tell you, the U and Y product line processors are very energy-efficient. Therefore, they would be a reliable option for writers to ensure a long battery life. For instance: Intel Core i5 7200U, i5-8250U, i5-8550U.
There is no limitation, you can also go with a more powerful processor like i7-7500U or i78550U, but it would be over-rated if you’re going to use your laptop only for writing work.
RAM
Nowadays, 8GB RAM is common in the laptop, which is just enough for typing work. However, it won’t be a bad idea if you can choose even more, especially if you’re a Chrome user.
Portability
The weight and screen size are two pillars that affect the portability of the laptop.
Writer’s habits are different from others; they can work sitting in the grass, on a couch or in a coffee shop. Therefore, it becomes super important to choose a lighter weight laptop.
If you want a big-screen laptop, then you have to compromise on the weight. Finally, you have to sacrifice for one feature – weight or screen size. Commonly, a 17″ beast with the 8-9 pound is not going to work.
Battery Life
It is also a significant feature because luckily there won’t open the power outlets available everywhere for you. Moreover, writing is very time-consuming work, for example – for writing this post I spent 6-7 hours. So, it becomes imperative to check the battery life of the laptop before purchasing.
In most cases, the manufacturers claim the more battery life, but in reality, it differs. You can find 1-2 hours difference in the backup, and in the worst-case scenario, this difference can go up to 3 hours.
The rating that the manufacturers indicate on their laptop specs that are calculated based on the browsing internet time while connected to the wireless connection.
Dedicated Graphics
Not necessary! If you are going to use your laptop only for writing, then integrated graphics are sufficient for you.
Wrapping it up
Now you know, there is no rocket science behind choosing the best laptops for writers in 2025. A right quality keyboard, lightweight, and long battery life are very crucial requirements for any writer. While processor, memory, and storage depend on your needs. Here is a quick summary for you.
If you’re looking a laptop only for your typing work need, then you can choose between the Acer Aspire E15 and HP HP 14-CF0014DX, both laptops are very cost-efficient. If you need a portable, then HP would be perfect for you, while Acer is offering many great features but has something high weight.
If you have something better budget, the Asus VivoBook is one of the most popular laptops of 2025, which might be an excellent choice for typing work.
For mid-price range the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E480 is my top choice, it has the best quality keyboard with high performance and many great features. While, for Apple fans, the MacBook Air 13 would be an excellent choice for mid-range, if you can spend more, you can also go for the latest MacBook Air.
Lastly, the LG Gram is my best choice in the Windows laptop for typing work; it is the lightest and slimmest laptop here, which is offering reliable performance with the most extended battery life. On the other hand, the HP Spectre x360-13t is my most premium choice, which is offering the best performance along with lots of top-notch features.
