Best Laptops for Writers in 2022 – Review

1. Acer Aspire E 15 (Best Cheap Laptop for Writing)

5.27 lbs | i3-8130U @3.4GHz | HD 620 | 6 GB | 250 GB SSD | 15.6-inch | 1920 x 1080 | 13.5-hours | Win 10 Home

Before discussing this laptop, I want to tell you it is a slightly heavy laptop. Nonetheless, I have included this laptop on the list; there are some reasons behind it.

First of all, the Acer Aspire E 15 is one of the most inexpensive laptops which is offering the latest Intel i3-8130U processor and 15.6-inch full HD screen; it is appreciable. Moreover, it is also offering a long battery life. Therefore, its weight can be accepted. If you’re looking for a cheap laptop just for writing work, it might be the right choice.

This laptop is offering a 15.6-inch LED-lit display with full HD resolution, which provides excellent image quality with wide view angles, and draws less power. Moreover, it is coming with a 250GB SSD drive, which is another reason behind its most extended battery life.

In terms of performance, it is offering the Intel i3-8130U processor, 6GB memory and 256GB SSD; I think it is pretty good for a budget notebook. You can easily do your typing work with multitasking capability.

However, it is not as powerful as other machines, but if you need a laptop for writing only, it isn’t less than gems for this price.

The Acer Aspire E 15 is offering a durable, full-size keyboard with the right numeric keypad, which can deliver a comfortable typing experience. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the backlit facility.

As I said in the starting, this laptop is slightly heavy, but this weight leads to reliable durability, which you’ll see in this laptop. Moreover, it is accessible to upgradable; you can replace the memory and storage drive by just removing a single cover, which is nice.

Overall, if you’re really on the tight budget, the Acer Aspire is one of the most inexpensive laptops for writing in 2022, which is offering brilliant features.

  • Most affordable
  • Good full HD display with LED-lit backlit
  • Solid build quality
  • Fantastic performance while considering the price
  • A whole day battery life with a single charge
  • Durable keyboard
  • A bit heavier than other laptops of our list
  • Somewhat traditional and old design

However, the Acer Aspire is better than this laptop in battery life, display quality, and performance, but this laptop still has a safe corner for writers.

This HP 14-CF0014DX laptop is offering a 14-inch display with HD resolution; therefore, it’s quite portable. Moreover, it has around two pounds less weight than Acer Aspire E 15, which is the icing on the cake. That’s why it might be a great affordable laptop for those writers who always work on the road.

It has Intel Core i3-7100U, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage, these specifications are ok for a typing work, and we can’t also expect more from it at this low price.

Aesthetically, this HP laptop looks far better than our previous notebook; it is offering a gorgeous design with narrow bezels.

If you’re looking for a portable laptop for writing work in the budget category, the HP 14-CF0014DX might be the best bet for you.

15 January 2008, yes! The date when Apple had introduced the first MacBook Air, and it was the first metal unibody design product as well from the company. The MacBook Air series has influenced the people who prefer the portability, and the writers also fall under it. If you’re ready to pay something extra on your writing laptop, the MacBook Air 13 could be one of the most reliable choices. It has almost everything that a writer looks into a computer.

Do you know, what is the unique thing about Lenovo’s ThinkPad business series laptops? They are so “shameless” that can last through the years; especially the keyboard quality is simply the best. You won’t believe, I still have a Lenovo R400, it’s almost ten years passed, and it’s still working; however, I have replaced the battery two times.

Notably, the latest LG Gram laptop has only 2.95 lbs weight despite a 17-inch large screen, which is just phenomenal.

I have listed the 15.6-inch model because this size is enough to see what you’re doing and won’t dominate over you. While working on the road, it’s very convenient. However, if you need a small or large size, it is available in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 17-inch as well, you can pick as per your choice.

Best Laptops for Typing work in 2022 - Buyer's Guide

Whether you’re looking for the best laptops for novelists, screenwriting, publishing, authors, or journalism students; here are some thumbs of rules that you should keep in mind.

A keyboard is an essential component that a writer looks into a laptop. Why not? It is not just about only typing some emails; writers can check the durability peak point of any keyboard. So, it becomes necessary to choose the right keyboard, that “suit” your hands.

The space between keys, depth, and feedback these are few things that only a writer or a person who does typing work, can understand.

There are mainly two types of keyboard available in the laptops – mechanical and membrane.

Mechanical keyboards have some “click-clack” type sound when pressing and releasing them, because they have hard keys underneath, and they are ideal for the gamers. On the other hand, membrane keyboards have the soft rubber underlay that provides tactile feedback.

However, you can connect any types of input device when you are home, but if you think practically, then you need a laptop with the right keyboard.

Nowadays, a big screen is not just for watching a movie or games; writers also want the big screen that can handle their rigorous searching.

As I said earlier, writers are no less than scientists; no one knows how much information they consume before writing the viral content.

For this reason, a 10″ screen is not going to work. In windows laptops, 15.6″ screen is typical, but for portability, a 13″ screen works fine. However, you can add a 1440p monitor or ultra-wide monitor in your setup for extending your working area if you’re at home.

Like a gaming laptop or 3D modeling workstation, writing job doesn’t need that sophisticated hardware configuration. However, it doesn’t mean that even a Pentium processor would be enough for you. For choosing a laptop for writers, you should choose at least Intel Core i3 Processor of the latest Generation like i3-7500U or i3-8130U.

In facts, an Intel i5 processor from the U or Y product lineup would be great. In case you don’t know, I want to tell you, the U and Y product line processors are very energy-efficient. Therefore, they would be a reliable option for writers to ensure a long battery life. For instance: Intel Core i5 7200U, i5-8250U, i5-8550U.

There is no limitation, you can also go with a more powerful processor like i7-7500U or i78550U, but it would be over-rated if you’re going to use your laptop only for writing work.

Nowadays, 8GB RAM is common in the laptop, which is just enough for typing work. However, it won’t be a bad idea if you can choose even more, especially if you’re a Chrome user.

The weight and screen size are two pillars that affect the portability of the laptop.

Writer’s habits are different from others; they can work sitting in the grass, on a couch or in a coffee shop. Therefore, it becomes super important to choose a lighter weight laptop.

If you want a big-screen laptop, then you have to compromise on the weight. Finally, you have to sacrifice for one feature – weight or screen size. Commonly, a 17″ beast with the 8-9 pound is not going to work.

It is also a significant feature because luckily there won’t open the power outlets available everywhere for you. Moreover, writing is very time-consuming work, for example – for writing this post I spent 6-7 hours. So, it becomes imperative to check the battery life of the laptop before purchasing.

In most cases, the manufacturers claim the more battery life, but in reality, it differs. You can find 1-2 hours difference in the backup, and in the worst-case scenario, this difference can go up to 3 hours.

The rating that the manufacturers indicate on their laptop specs that are calculated based on the browsing internet time while connected to the wireless connection.

Not necessary! If you are going to use your laptop only for writing, then integrated graphics are sufficient for you.

Wrapping it up

Now you know, there is no rocket science behind choosing the best laptops for writers in 2022. A right quality keyboard, lightweight, and long battery life are very crucial requirements for any writer. While processor, memory, and storage depend on your needs. Here is a quick summary for you.

If you’re looking a laptop only for your typing work need, then you can choose between the Acer Aspire E15 and HP HP 14-CF0014DX, both laptops are very cost-efficient. If you need a portable, then HP would be perfect for you, while Acer is offering many great features but has something high weight.

If you have something better budget, the Asus VivoBook is one of the most popular laptops of 2022, which might be an excellent choice for typing work.

For mid-price range the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E480 is my top choice, it has the best quality keyboard with high performance and many great features. While, for Apple fans, the MacBook Air 13 would be an excellent choice for mid-range, if you can spend more, you can also go for the latest MacBook Air.

Lastly, the LG Gram is my best choice in the Windows laptop for typing work; it is the lightest and slimmest laptop here, which is offering reliable performance with the most extended battery life. On the other hand, the HP Spectre x360-13t is my most premium choice, which is offering the best performance along with lots of top-notch features.
